Using rituals from other cultures in your ceremony (2)

This is the second post in a series of four looking at rituals from other cultures which could be included in a Celebrant led ceremony.

"The four directions ritual" 

This ritual has it's roots in Native American culture but similar rituals are also present in other cultures too.

Within this ceremony the couple turn to the four directions of the compass.  Each holds a special significance and bestows a different blessing.

East - the direction from which the sun rises.  This is the area of communication of the heart, mind and body.  With each sunrise we begin afresh.  The light from the sun can lighten even the darkest times.

South - the warmth of home and the spirit of growth.

West - the element of water.  The imagery of water is very evocative.  The deep commitment of the lake, the swift excitement of the rive, the cleaning of rain, the passion of the sea.

North - the earth.  Firm foundations which can be built on to build a happy and successful partnership

Example of wording which might be used

"Let the qualities of water and the love your feel always flow through your hearts in strong waves."
