The wedding cake has featured in ceremonies since early times.

In Roman times the cake was often thrown at the couple !

Cutting the cake is often the first task the couple do together.

Styles have changed and couples can now commission a cake which reflects their personalities and interests.

Wedding traditions - the wedding dress.

Queen Victoria started the trend for white wedding dresses.  Prior to this the bride wore their prettiest clothes.

In other cultures brides traditionally do not wear white.  In China brides wear red as a symbol of success, loyalty, fertility and love.

Wedding traditions - Bridesmaids

In Roman times a couple had to have ten witnesses. The bridesmaids all had to dress like the bride in order to confuse evil spirits who might sabotage the marriage.

Today the role of bridesmaid has changed but they are still an important part of making the big day a success by supporting the couple in the organisation of the wedding day.  Fortunately, there isn't the need to have ten bridesmaids if you don't wish to.

Wedding traditions - carrying a bouquet.

In Medieval times brides used to carry herbs rather than flowers.  This practice is thought to originate from the belief that the herbs would protect the couple from evil spirits and illness.    There was also an added benefit that the smell of the herbs disguised body odour !

Around the 1700's brides started to carry flowers.  Different flowers had different meanings  and the bouquet reflected the hopes of the bride.

Today's brides have a wide range of styles and flowers to choose from and a bouquet still can reflect their hopes and aspirations.
