No, the legal bit has to be done in a registry office; it takes less than 10 minutes and costs around £100 in total. Many couples do this in jeans and t-shirts and they save the dressing up for the wedding ceremony. However, in the future, if a law which is currently passing through Parliament goes on to the Statute books then this may be possible.

If you choose an Independent Celebrant then you can include religious content in your celebration. The same would apply for those couples who want no reference to religion. Each ceremony is created for you and so no two ceremonies are the same. If you plan to marry abroad or use the simple "two + two" service offered by the Registration Service then having a Celebrant led ceremony at a future date is an ideal way to bring all your family and friends together for a Wedding ceremony. You can include all the elements which we traditionally associate with a Wedding such as walking down the aisle, exchanging rings, making promises. In addition you can include things which you may not be able to include when your service is conducted by a Registrar or in Church such as sharing a glass of wine. A Celebrant led ceremony is always written with you in mind and no two ceremonies are the same. Candles have long been the symbol of light and hope and there is a tradition of using them in ceremonies of all kinds. Below is an extract from a Naming ceremony in which a candle was jointly lit by all the people who would form the circle of support for the child. "This is a symbol of the light and warmth which has been bought into all of your lives through the birth of this child. As this candle burns brightly, so we hope that this child's pathway in life will have a bright future. May they know the warmth of the love that surrounds them." |
